Wild Boar

Identification

The wild boar is characterized by its long and triangular head, small eyes, short legs and a massif and robust body with a dense and rough hair throughout most part of the year. The coat colour usually varies depending on the age, being predominantly reddish when they are young and turning into brown or black when they are adults. Males present big tusks which will grow as they get older and that they use them to defend themselves in fights. On average, an adult weighs between 155lb – 210lb, however we can find bigger ones occasionally.

Hunting

Wild boar hunting can be one of the most exciting hunts to do and a big male will drive any experienced hunter completely crazy. They can either be hunted from a blind or in Monteria. If a hunter wants to shoot one from the blind, we will sit and patiently wait in the afternoon until the big tusker decides to show up. On the other hand, wild boar is the number 1 desired species for Monteria hunts. Anybody experiencing what it feels like to see a wild boar running towards them chased by a pack of dogs will want to repeat it every year.

Habitat

Wild boars can easily adapt to any kind of habitat and although they are usually found in thick brush, it is not uncommon to see them in open areas such as meadows and marshland. As long as there is enough for them to feed and some protection, wild boars can live anywhere. Currently, wild boars are present across most parts of the Spanish Peninsula.

Habits

Wild boars are mainly nocturnal, and they usually cover large extensions of terrain looking for food. Occasionally, they can also be found at dawn or in the evenings just before dark. Females and young individuals live in large groups whereas adult males are completely independent but sometimes they might be accompanied by a younger male. In places where food is so abundant, wild boars mate during the all year, however the main mating season normally takes place between November and December. During this time, you will often see big males in the large groups. In terms of food, wild boars are omnivorous so they can feed on anything.
