Roe Deer

Identification

Characterized for being the smallest amongst the Spanish deer species, the roe deer has small antlers with 3 points under normal circumstances. It presents prominent ears and larger than usual eyes with a reddish coat colour in summer which turns into grey during autumn and winter. In terms of size, its hight at the withers is about 28 inches and exceptionally an adult male can weigh up to 67lb.

Hunting

Roe deer hunting at dawn or in the evening is probably one of the most beautiful hunts any hunter can do. Their perfect camouflage as well as a strong development of all senses makes it a real challenge when it comes to look for a big trophy. Patience, silent walking and a good pair of binoculars are basic to guarantee the success of the hunt.

Habitat

Originally present in isolated areas across the Spanish Peninsula, roe deer has colonized most of our territory in the last years and it is currently distributed throughout the entire country, being the regions of Castilla y León, Castilla la Mancha and Aragón the areas with the biggest trophies.

Habits

Their activity usually takes place at night but generally, it is common to find them during the early and late hours of the day as well. During the months of April and May, when the adult males fight to settle their territory and the crops provide rich nutrients it is not uncommon to see many roe deer at any given time. In autumn and winter, roe deer live in large groups whereas in spring and summer they live independent.
