2. Hunting Areas

Along the years we have been able to gain access to some of the most pristine territories across Canada, all of which we know personally. As it would not be too practical to mention all of them, some of the general hunting territories, by regions, are the following:

  • Yukon Territories: Hart Lake area, between Tombstone Park and Sahtu Lands, as well as the mountain ranges of Ruby, Sifton, Nisling and Dawson to the southeast of Yukon.

  • Northwestern Territories (NWT): to the south of the Mackenzie Mountains.

  • Nunavut: hunting areas distributed across the whole Canadian Arctic including Frobisher, Cambridge, Resolute Bays as well as its many islands.

  • British Columbia: Vancouver Island, Okanagan Valley, Muncho Lake and Muskwa-Kechika.

5. General Comment

Apart from being the second largest country in the world, Canada represents the true meaning of what hunting in North America really is. Its beautiful landscapes are home to the largest tundra plateaus mixed with evergreen forests and huge rivers, as well as the different ranges of the Rocky Mountains, Yukon, Northwestern Territories and British Columbia. On top of that, Canada is also home to the Arctic Circle and its infinite coastline, characterized by its numerous archipelagos and bays. These offer hunting opportunities of another era in one of the most remote yet richest wilderness on Earth. Canada is one of the very few places that remains practically untouched by humans.

With regards to hunting, Canada is a true paradise for any hunter willing to immerse in a pristine and unexplored territory where the lack of human pressure is so evident that even wild animals behave atypically when capturing our presence. Beyond that, Canada is home to more big game animal species than any other place in America. Although differentiation between species has seem to become controversial, Canada officially includes six species of sheep, mountain goat, five species of bear, four species of moose, six species of caribou, three species of wapiti, two species of bison and muskox, as well as a wide variety of deer and predators such as cats, wolves and the aggressive wolverines. Depending on the areas, hunting will either be conducted on foot and with spike camp or on horseback staying in wooden cabins for the night. For the polar bear, muskox and walrus hunts, traditional dog sleds, boats and ATVs are used depending on the time of the year.

The wide spectrum of possibilities that Canada has to offer, has led the appearance of a significant number of cheap outfitters and operators, whose services lie far away from the quality standards that we would consider for our clients. The extreme weather conditions in winter, together with the high number of predators have a direct impact on the animal densities, which tend to be generally lower that those seen in Europe, Africa or even Asia. Furthermore, it is unlikely to have a premium place for multitude species. Hence, it is of vital importance to rely on the best outfitter in accordance to the hunt one intends to pursue. Operators must be able to show a wide expertise, solid operational infrastructures, favourable feedback references and optimal success rates.

Over more than 25 years, at Camino Real Hunting Consultants we have been able to put together a selection of superb outfitters that we have represented and known personally, enabling us to witness the outstanding quality of the services provided and offering hunters the best available options in Canada, achieving fantastic results year after year.
