2. Hunting Areas

As a largely mountainous country, much of the big game hunting in Austria is done at the foothills and lower ranges of the beautiful Alps. The specific hunting area will exclusively depend on the species to be hunted. Through our outfitter and partner, our clients will access some of the finest hunting territories of the country, alternating the unique landscapes of the Austrian Alps for species such as the Alpine ibex and chamois with some of the most fascinating hunting estates for other species such as mouflon sheep, red deer, etc.

5. General Comment

With more than 130,000 officially registered hunters, Austria is probably the European country with the highest density of hunters among its population. This fact, together with the long hunting tradition throughout the country, proves a strong acceptance of hunting between the population; hence meaning that hunters are very much welcomed.

Our outfitter has more than 25 years of hunting experience in Austria, offering first class hunting services for international hunters and providing us the opportunity to hunt in some of the finest territories throughout the country with a special focus in free range hunts for chamois, roe buck, red stag, mouflon sheep, alpine ibex, capercaillie and black cock.

But if there is something Austria stands out from the rest European countries with regards to hunting, it is the respect and the manners shown by hunters and hunting guides towards the game species, the countryside and everything around hunting. For them, the most important thing is the reverence for the harvested game, showing their maximum respect with the “last bite” and setting the animals neatly for a picture.

No matter if it is a chamois hunt in the snowy mountains of the Alps or a red stag in the deepest forest, hunting in Austria proves to be one of the best hunting experiences in Europe. Just to hear your guide telling you “Waidmannsheil” after a successful hunt is worth the trip.
